The most important civilizations of the ancient world prospered in Athens and live today through tales and buildings who hold out heroic against unforgiving time. One of the most special destination for people interested of history is Athens – unique because of the Parthenon and the other buildings from the Acropolis who will transpose the visitors in an era long faded.
Above Athens on the Acropolis hill called the holy rock, you can admire the Parthenon, the most important and known monument of the old Hellenic  civilization, the symbol of Greece. It was dedicated to the goddess Athena Parthenos – the goddess of wisdom, of arts and of war in the Greek mythology.Between the museums of Athens are The National Museum of Archeology which contains the biggest collection of Greek art, The Byzantine Museum which will offer you a image of the Athenian religion through icons and religious relicts, The Benaki Museum with his collection of treasures from all historical periods including jewelry, costumes and two paintings of El Greco, The Goulandris Museum with a unique collection of white marble statues and the Acropolis Museum.

Other sights of major importance are: The Herodotus Atticus Theatre , The Dionysus Theatre, The Omonia Square, The Syntagma Square where the parliament building is and where you will  meet soldiers dressed in traditional festivity clothes typical  for the military in Greek, The National Library, Adrian’s Library, The Adrian Gate, The Poseidon Temple who had at the beginning 34 columns but only 15 survived over time, Temple of Olympian Zeus, The  Hephaistos Temple.

Near the Syntagma Square is Athens Central Park where you can rest under the shadow of palms and admire the monuments of great philosophers like Euripides, Sophocles or Achilles.

How is Athens? To include all the beauty that it offers, Athens seems to be a goddess whit white chest of sand, exotic body, green eyes and the melancholy of years passing by in blue looks, a goddess that watches over the kingdom with winding streets who are keeping worlds that have gone so much time ago and still come up and live in the eyes of every tourist. Athens is the city that revives from it’s own ashes.

Visit Zagreb http://www.tripsholiday.com/europe/visit-zagreb.html http://www.tripsholiday.com/europe/visit-zagreb.html#comments Sun, 07 Mar 2010 08:40:23 +0000 admin http://www.tripsholiday.com/?p=14 The Neo-Gothic  Cathedral
Formerly known as the Cathedral of Saint – Stephen, this is now dedicated to the Christs Mother. It stands out especially because of the two twin towers, built in the Neo-Gothic style, and visible from any area of the city. Unfortunately, it is almost always in the process of renovation, largely because of its turbulent history. Built in 1093, it was completed only in 1242 in the original construction in the Romanesque style. The next 21 years were enough damage to the building, badly damaged by repeated sieges of the Tartars. In 1624, a series of devastating fires almost completely destroyed the church, for, in 1645, one last outburst of flame to demolish what was left standing. Rebuilt with great difficulty, the cathedral was severely damaged by earthquake in 1880. There followed 12 years of restoration. I n 1990 they began to restore the exterior of the cathedral, still under way. Of the old buildings are still preserved the frescoes of the XIII century, the Renaissance pews, the marble altars and a pulpit in Baroque style.

The Mimar Museum
Housed in a neo-Renaissance style building, the  Mimar Museum contains one of the most valuable art collections in Europe. The objects, some thousands in number, were donated by Ante Topic Mimar municipality, a private collector originating in Zagreb.  Currently, there are 3750 collections at the museum, among which include signed works by Raphael, Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Gogh and da Vinci. Here one can admire the impressive collection of artifacts belonging to ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Greece, Mesopotamia and ancient Rome. The museum is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays between 10:00 and 17:00, and Thursdays between 10:00 and 14:00.
The  Mirogoj  Cemetery
Located in the north of Zagreb, Mirogoj is one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Europe. Here you can admire some absolutely spectacular mausoleums and English landscape type are surrounded by a large arch neo-Renaissance, dating from the nineteenth century. Flickering candle, placed alongside richly ornamented gravestones and surrounded by colorful flowers, make this place the rest of the dead in a corner of paradise for the living. It is interesting to note how different religions, languages and cultures are represented here. The cemetery is the last halting place for local personalities such as Drazen Petrovic, Franjo Tudman, Petar Preradovie or Ljudevita Gaja.
Wild animal farm
The  Maksimir park, located in Zagreb, seems to be the ideal place to relax: green lawns, lakes with clear water and sky as a watercolor painting. The 18 hectares of land covered with luxuriant vegetation were open to the public in 1794, the park being the first to be opened in this region of Europe. For those who do not like vegetation, Maksimir also delivers a surprise: the road to the city zoo.
Nada flowers Founded in 1890 in Zagreb the botanical garden contains over 10,000 plant species, some more spectacular than others. Moreover, the nature park has been invaded by all sorts of turtles, birds and whole families of rates. For recreation, the visitors are offered several benches to sit on.
